Box Cottage, Charmouth: A Breath-taking Coastal Retreat for One (or Two)
If you’re craving some space to slow down, relax and enjoy the little moments, Box Cottage offers the perfect escape. Thoughtfully curated by its wonderful owner, Jacqui Butterfield, Box Cottage aims to provide a luxurious home from home environment centred around relaxation & joy.
Tucked away in the quaint village of Charmouth, days at Box Cottage begin gently, light filters softly through the windows and the warmth of the super-king loaf bed wakes you up slowly to an unhurried day that’s entirely your own.
A short downhill stretch to the beach (voted best winter beach in the world by Lonely Planet) gives you a peaceful start watching the waves flow in, or brew some deliciously provided & sustainable Pact coffee back at the cottage to spend a slow morning sipping in the courtyard garden.
Inside Box Cottage, everything is designed by Jacqui with comfort, ease and sustainability in mind. Soft textures, like the green velvet sofas, to the warm pastel pink tones creates a cosy yet restorative space to relax in. The interior and furniture provide a good nod towards sustainable UK-based companies, from the B-corporation Pact Coffee, to the beautifully hand-crafted coffee table and cupboards by Scumble Goosie. It’s the perfect blend to take your mind off the day-to-day, whether that’s curling up with a good book, popping on a favourite film or just enjoying the quiet company of each other for those looking for a romantic getaway.
For couples, Box Cottage provides the ideal spot to reconnect without distraction; lounge around in style, or bask in the sun-trap courtyard garden with a glass or two of your favourite treat. Embrace the silliness & joy of romantic cliches by strolling hand-in-hand along the nearby beach, whipping up a supper in the kitchen and long-mornings relaxing in bed.
For the solo travellers & adventurers the tranquillity and comfort of Box Cottage beckons. A private and unique spot on the Jurassic Coast just for you, from days wandering the south west coastal path to morning dips in the sea, it’s the perfect place for some well-deserved 'me time.’
For the creatives amongst you, pull up the vintage chair in Box Cottage’s inviting office, draw inspiration from the coastal surrounding and peer out of the adjacent picture-perfect Box Cottage windows as your creative thoughts flow through your finger-tips!
Whilst it’ll be hard to leave the picturesque Box Cottage behind, there’s some tempting treats awaiting the foodies. Time your visit well and book onto Mark’s Kitchen Table (also in Charmouth!), located a hop & skip away. Here, Mark Hix (MBE) will teach you a tip or two whilst cooking up a storm for you in his own home. Perfect for an afternoon, or evening of great food, flowing wine and plenty of conversation.
If you’re interested in the whole shebang, Hix & Wild might be the perfect compliment for your stay at Box Cottage. This unique opportunity is a whole day centred around learning to forage for seasonal and local delights. Mark and local forager Nick Cadwell will help you discover delights on your doorstep, from an array of spring greens in Spring to hearty wild mushrooms in the Autumnal season. Spend the evening gathered round Mark’s kitchen table as you enjoy a feast of your foraged fayre, alongside a glass or two (maybe three!) before ending the evening in a happy daze at Box Cottage.
For those who want to embrace their inner explorer, Charmouth Beach is famous for its hidden treasures. Watch an afternoon whisk by and hunt amongst the pebbles for fossils or perfect pieces of sea glass smoothed by the flowing waves. Dip into the heritage centre that lies beachside and marvel at the treasures that have been uncovered on this very beach. Most recently, someone partaking in the local fossil walk between Lyme Regis and Charmouth discovered a fragment of jaw from the world’s oldest marine crocodile (one of only 11 known fossils from this ancient animal!) Who knows, perhaps you’ll find the next rare discovery?
For those looking to explore the best of the best of the foodie scene in the local area, (outside of our fab choices in Lyme Regis!) we highly recommend a drive to Bridport for some of the best meals around. Visit restaurant 101 with an after trip to Selected Grapes located next door for an evening filled with delicious wine and amazing food!
Fancy some other options? Explore our Eat, Rest, Play Bridport or West Bay recommendations to find the perfect spot for you. Box Cottage awaits your return with a warm & cosy embrace after a day exploring the nearby towns.

Pop your feet up and breath a big sigh of relief as you snooze in the courtyard garden or immerse yourself in the super king-size bed, a lovely taste of luxury after a days trek.
